The Grimoire

Once a week we copy out a spell for anyone to use. And always, the moon's current temperament — so you know what to brew and when.

This week's working

The Equinox Balance Charm

As the season tips from light into dark, we cast this small charm to steady the home and heart. A gentle working, fit for kitchen witches, beginners, and anyone whose autumn has felt a little off-balance.

You will need

  • One white candle and one black candle
  • A small dish of salt
  • A sprig of dried rosemary
  • A bowl of water with a fallen leaf floating in it

The working

  1. Set the two candles an arm's length apart, unlit, with the bowl between them.
  2. Light the white candle first, then the black, saying: "Light and dark, I let you meet."
  3. Sprinkle a pinch of salt into the water for each thing you wish to steady.
  4. Pass the rosemary through the smoke of both candles, then tuck it above your doorway.
  5. Let both candles burn down together before you leave the room.

Intention: to settle what is unsettled, and welcome the dark half of the year with an open door rather than a locked one.

The Lunar Calendar

Every potion on our shelf is timed to a phase. Find where the moon stands tonight, and brew — or rest — accordingly.

New Moon

For setting intentions and beginning new brews. The shelf is quiet; the cauldron waits.

Waxing Crescent

Good for tonics of growth and vitality, like Emberroot. Plant your herbs now.

First Quarter

A time for courage and decisions. Favor bold, warming brews over gentle ones.

Waxing Gibbous

Refine what you've started. Strain, bottle, and label with a steady hand.

Full Moon

Peak potency for dream draughts like Moonveil. Bottle under open sky if you can.

Waning Gibbous

A quiet time for gratitude brews and sharing potions with neighbors.

Last Quarter

Good for release and healing salves, such as Hearth & Bone. Let old things go.

Waning Crescent

Rest, reflect, and clean your jars. The best brew is sometimes no brew at all.
